Right to Request Flexible Working

Employee’s rights to request flexible working are changing from 30th June 2014. The Government is updating the law to give all employees, with more than 26 weeks continuous service, the right to request flexible working. Previously this was only open for those with children under the age of 17 (or 18 if the child is disabled) and certain carers. Under the new guidelines employers must consider all applications, but will be able to reject requests if there are legitimate business reasons for doing so. Examples of these are: the business would be unable to meet customer demand, effecting quality and performance, or bringing extra costs to the business. Employers have a duty to deal with requests reasonably and a statutory code of practice has been issued by ACAS.

 Flexible Working Options

There are many different flexible working options employees can request.  These vary from part time roles, working hours outside of the usual working day and phased retirement.  The Government website has more information about the options employees can apply for. Logo
